Grace Garden Debuts: April 13, 2014--
Wow was I surprised today by all the enthusiastic help at Grace Garden!
Even though it was windy, we managed to get every single garden bed
weeded, fertilized, rototilled, and even planted!!!!! We planted Bed 3
with 8 hills of potatoes (thanks to Garrett for sure) and some onions made
it into each bed (the Salvation Army's family shelter LOVED the onions last
year, so we tripled the amount this year). This will be the fourth summer,
the family shelter is the primary beneficiary of our produce.
A HUGE thank you goes out to Ray Larson, Marvin Williams, Kriss Grubbe, and
her two sons, Garrett and Nick! Garrett dug out large amounts of grass and
weeds from several beds and planted every single potato. Nick ran the
rototiller in Bed 4.
Mark and I will be back on Tuesday night around 6:45 to check things out
and see if the sprinkling system is hitting everything it is supposed to
hit - OR- water. Ron Hampel is going to get the sprinkling system up and
running for us- thank you Ron! Ray is going to do some weed eating as
well either Tuesday night or some other time next week. Marvin has
committed to Saturdays (all you really need to do this Saturday or Sunday
when you're at church, is just check that the potatoes/onions are wet).
Whenever anyone has visual confirmation of a weed- PULL IT!
The next major activity for the garden will be planting. I will keep
everyone posted when that activity is about to occur. The veg I plan on at
this point is- chile peppers (I have some started), bell peppers,
cucumbers (I have some started), eggplant, tomatoes, zuchini, squash, and
of course, potatoes and onions. I decided to forego some of the high
maintenance crops like peas/beans/ lettuce this year. If any of you have
your heart set on something, PLEASE, let me know! Flexibility rules!
Finally, instead of landscape fabric, I think we'll try Ray's suggestion of
Preen and we'll try to be fastidious about weeding and see if we can keep
up. [?]

Five years ago, members of Grace built raised beds on the unused lawn of Grace House and planted a garden. This garden continues to be planted and tended by members. The produce is given to neighbors and non-profits such as the local women's shelter and the Salvation Army, and St. Vincent De Paul. The leaders of this effort in recent years are Mark and Angie Layne and daughter Mallory. They would love your help!

GRACE GARDEN:
Change of plans for the garden planting day. Instead of planting Sunday afternoon on May 17th like previously planned, we will be planting the garden on Wednesday May 6th (TOMORROW) during Youth Group (5:30-7:15pm). This will give the students a chance to be involved in the process. We are asking anyone who is available to come and help as we prepare for the harvest season.
